Giving my work a platform

I’m always had a thing for natural textures. Balsa wood is light weight and has a texture that is both inviting and feels nice to the touch. For certain collages this is where I start – the canvas.

Sanding and painting a base

I like to start with some colour. After I lightly sand down the edges of the balsa wood frame, I like to select a colour that will set the tone for the collage. Sometimes this is influenced by magazine pieces that I have already found. Sometimes it’s just a feeling. Either way, it makes the process of arranging elements interesting.

Sealed for freshness

Once I have committed to glueing down a completed collage, I like to coat it with a sealant. This not only binds it all together it blends wood and paper into seemingly one substrate. It makes the piece feel “complete”.
